From Mind to No-Mind

We are born as pure Awareness, a NoMind.

Awareness directed to the world of things gives rise to the Thinking Mind or "consciousness". It perceives that world as other than itself. Being identified with this thinking mind instead of the awareness which gives rise to it, leads to a false sense of separate self or ego. This false sense of separation then gives rise to the need to reclaim the sense of "oneness" we knew before the thinking mind emerged. Our original face. All our desires, and the suffering that accompanies them, are an attempt to fill the void created by this ignorance. Because it is false, the void cannot be filled, it is a bottomless begging bowl. What is needed is to move from the thinking mind back to Awareness or No Mind where the truth of Oneness is, and always has been, known.

The First Principle

The Glass Spheres in my sculptures represent “NoMind” or Awareness. It is our original face, that which lies beyond thinking and feeling but is nonetheless always present to what is. As we grow, we develop minds and personalities and become identified with them. This is Ego. Moving consciously beyond this Ego brings us home to our already full hearts. My sculptures are descriptions of the journey through the layers of mind/body identifications back to the NoMind or Enlightenment which only exists beyond those identifications. In that Silence true communion is found.

The symbol of “the First Principle” which I have used in some of my sculptures references the sign carved above Obaku temple in Kyoto. The First Principle is that the ego or self-consciousness is what veils present moment awareness and spontaneous action. When we are in identification or ego, we cannot be in awareness or fully present to oneness. We are in a kind of dream. We therefore “react “to the unfolding of life through the veil of the conditioned, thinking mind rather than responding spontaneously and directly to life from our undefended hearts.

The journey to freedom passes through the First Principle and the layers of conditioning that compose the shell of the Ego or Personality. Each journey is unique, each mind is a world unto itself. NoMind is awakening or Liberation from the conditioned self, the journeys end.

Enlightenment

Every ego/mind is a unique filter interpreting reality through its own distorted lens of separation.

This lens is a mental prison.

The state achieved by getting beyond the filter of the mind has been the original foundation of all the world’s religions and wisdom traditions and known by many names: Liberation, Moksha, Born Again, Awakening, Enlightenment and No-Mind.

Only in this state is it possible to be fully present to reality.

Only in this state are we free of fear.

Only in this state do we know we are part of all the love there is and not crippled by the belief that as separate beings we need to find love.

The Gateless Gate

The path to No-Mind is also known as the Gateless Gate.This seemingly non-sensical expression attempts to describe the process of directing awareness in the opposite direction, away from the world of objects, inwards upon itself.

As this cannot be done per se there is no path or gate. When Awareness does become self-aware there is a quantum leap to realization or “knowing”. Those that have known say that whilst we can’t make this happen, we can create the circumstances in which, by grace, it can happen.

Meditation

Watching the thinking mind continually, called meditation, serves to create the favorable circumstances.

Remembering to watch continually is a life's work.

My sculptures are intended to be self-reminders of this work.

"There can be no Consciousness without Awareness but there is Awareness without Consciousness, as in deep sleep.

Awareness is absolute, consciousness is relative to its content, consciousness is always of something.

To Know what you are you must first investigate and know what you are not. Discover all that you are not, body, feelings, thoughts, time, space, this or that. Nothing concrete or abstract which you perceive can be you, the very act of perceiving shows that you are not what you perceive.

Mind is interested in what happens while awareness is interested in the mind itself. The child is after the toy but the mother watches the child not the toy.

Awareness becomes consciousness when it has an object, the object changes all the time. In consciousness there is movement, awareness by itself is motionless and timeless, here, and now. Awareness is primordial, it is the original state. Beginning-less, endless, uncaused, unsupported, without parts, without change.”
